but yea i had a toshiba and I and everyone i know has had there screen broken within a month or 2. wouldnt recc. Dell is amazng. Wonderful service and customer service.

Why does this list leave off the Asus EEE? Sure it's not as big as these other laptops, but it definitely deserves a spot on this list.

How do you break a laptop screen? when not doing something stupid that is. I have a Toshiba, not that one granted, but its had no problems for well over 2 years.

The eeePC is a unique computer, it is like comparing an MC Smart Car with the Honda Civic. The measurements for reliability, performance and customer use are completely different. All of those computers can run the same exact programs and Operating systems, with the exception of the Mac which can run OSX without crazy boot options and tricks. The eee is a great little laptop, but much like the Apple Air it cannot be mainstream, it is designed as a secondary computer not a primary one.

Why does everybody think only a "brand name" computer works fine?? First of all, apple and the Macbook is soo overrated, I mean come on, all they do is have a good marketing and way too much free time at their hands to create useless "cool" looking programs... Secondly: Sony Vaio... substract like 400-700$(depending on the level of notebook) off of each "vaio" branded laptop and reduce the colorstrength of the display by like 1/10 and boom, you get any other notebook which price isn't exaggeratley high set because of some egotrip problems. I can't say anything about dell because I know their support and pricess differ greatly between here (Germany) and the US. The display of the Toshiba sucks (my brother had one and I could laugh at him every day) since it lives for like half a year until the corners and great deal of the sides start to turn brighter and lose color. I never used HP or Compaq, so I can't judge them too well.

This list really seems to be done with the intention to earn money by references....

Also the best thing I can advise people to do before they buy a notebook: 1st ask a friend who has at least some knowledge about it or who is just better with computers and help you look something up (Only if you aren't capable of doing it yourself)

2nd Read as many customer Reviews as you can, and not at places like Bestbuy or Target (People who buy their notebook their just don't have any clue what so ever!) Try to look up some independent notebook testing sites, sadly I could only tell you German ones, but I don't think that would be of any help here.

Love my Mac. I take it to every class I can. Definitely has helped me be more productive because I hardly have any issues with it.

I don't mean any harm Patrick, but no one stated that brand names were the only way to go - It's just that this particular blog is titled "6 Cheapest BIG-NAME laptops for Students. Maybe a different blog would address the "sleepers", if you will. Besides, it appears as if it's difficult to get enough data to support your theory as even by your own admission, you can only refer us to German websites. Alrighty then...
