Avoid These 7 Danger Foods and Slay “The Freshman 15”

The dreaded Freshman 15.

When your all-nighters are fueled by sugar-laden and calorie-packed Monster Energy drinks, drive-thru Taco Bell and Jack in the Box combos, and 3:00 a.m. IHOP runs, and when you’re skipping the gym the next day to get caught up on your sleep, it’s no wonder why college can make you pack on the pounds.

We all know the basic advice: Eat less, exercise more. But some foods are so meteorically bad, they can sabotage even the best weight-control plans.

Here are seven foods (and drinks) that make our “Worst Edible Things to Put in Your Mouth” list. Stay away from these, and you’ll have an easier time fighting off that freshman fat and those bad college eating habits that can put your health at risk.

1) Soft Drinks

Besides the fact that soft drinks are “empty calories” that offer no nutritional value, they’ve been linked to obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and kidney problems.

The average can of non-diet soda has a substantial 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories. A single can of soda a day, if you’re not working it off, can add up to 15 pounds a year.

Think you’re safe because you’re drinking diet? Think again. The risk of obesity has actually been found to be higher with diet soda drinkers.

If you want to keep those extra pounds off, skip the soda and reach for the water instead.

2) Doughnuts

Sure, we might love those late-night runs to Dunkin’ Donuts or Krispy Kreme, but when you take a closer look at that doughnut, you’ll find nothing but sugar, refined flour, artificial flavoring, and partially hydrogenated oils that are jam-packed with heart-hazardous trans fats.

Whereas ice cream packs calcium and chocolate at least contains antioxidants, doughnuts, like soft drinks, offer no redeeming nutritional value. Carla Wolper, a senior nutritionist at the New York Obesity Research Center, says that “When it comes to health, the only thing good about them is the hole.”

3) Hot Dogs and Processed Lunchmeat

Processed meats like hot dogs, sausage, and pepperoni, are loaded with sodium nitrite, a carcinogenic linked to a 67% increased risk for pancreatic cancer.

Sodium nitrite, says nutritionist Mike Adams, author of Grocery Warning, “is a dangerous, cancer-causing ingredient that has no place in the human food supply.”

4) Campbell’s Soup (yup, that includes Chunky, Select, and plain ol’ regular)

Half a can of this admittedly tasty soup averages more than half a person’s daily recommended salt intake. Diets high in salt have been linked to high blood pressure, which can cause heart attacks and strokes.

Concerned, but not ready to nix Campbell’s entirely? Try Campbell’s Healthy Request soups, which have about half the sodium of the others, or Campbell’s 25% Less Sodium soups.

5) Burger King Quad Stacker

A monument to meaty excess, this titanic sandwich consists of four hamburger patties, four slices of cheese, eight strips of bacon, and creamy BK Stacker Sauce made with high fructose corn syrup, all loaded onto a bun for an unbelievable 1,000 calories, 68 grams of fat, 30 grams of saturated fat, 2 grams of trans fat, 240 mg of cholesterol, and 1,800 mg of sodium — over a day’s recommended sodium intake!

Avoid this nutritional monstrosity, period.

6) Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream

Love watching your favorite combination of rich ice cream and crunchy toppings get scooped and mixed in front of your eyes?

Let’s say your custom Cold Stone concoction comes with pecans, brownie bites, fudge, and caramel. You’re looking at a staggering 1,610 calories, 43 grams of saturated fat, and an alarmingly high 3 grams of trans fat.

If you’re going for weight control, make Cold Stone a rare treat and not a regular Friday-night date.

7) Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

Five mashed potatoes with gravy pack a whopping 43 grams of fat and 562 calories, of which 388 come from fat. If you turn to this comfort food on more than just Thanksgiving or other special occasions, you make soon be looking at a very uncomforting number on that bathroom scale.

I will second this. As someone currently under a diet, just removing a small portion of these foods can help you lose weight and gain energy.

Thank god I have an irrational hatred for gravy.

Thanks for your expert advice Ryan! No one understands the science of weight management quite like 'someone currently under a diet.'

My advice is to stay the hell away from KFC and alcohol. I gained 35 pounds in 2 months from my wonderful freshman diet. Everyone partied day and night, and having a meal card made me more tempted to eat crap all the time. Stick to the poor students diet of instant noodles and water.

I'm trying to maintain weight and that burger looks pretty darn good. All the rest can go away.

I agree with all of this. Corn syrup is evil, and people need to eat more like their ancestors did, since our bodies are evolved for fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts seeds, occasional meat, not freakin' burgers and ice cream. But, damn, mashed potatoes and gravy sure are good...

It's true. I drank soda all my life. At age twenty six I gave it up,and switched to tea.The difference in the way I feel and look is amazing.Cutting down on sugar and salt had amazing results for me.Hydrate!!!

O.K. I eat all of this and still I'm thin as a rail. I will admit I felt better though after toning down the soda intake :)

I totally agree, detox the body and get a tattoo, that's my motto.

"Think you’re safe because you’re drinking diet? Think again. The risk of obesity has actually been found to be higher with diet soda drinkers."

Correlation does not equal causation. The article you link to points this out, although at the bottom of the article after the shock value has set in.

Ummm... who the hell can eat 5 potatoes, mashed or not?

Been doing Atkins for 4 years and haven't gained back any of the weight I lost. I lost 60 pounds the first 6 months on Atkins. I agree with most of what you say except for the diet soda. I have drank diet soda since age 15 and continue to drink it to this day. I think it depends on a persons metabolism whether or not something makes them gain or not.

Also I do eat the BK stacker no bun or the sauce and a side salad. No gains at all. Taco bell meat is a powdered meat that is mixed with hot water. It contains fillers with the meat.

crap. i can hog out on some mashed potatoes and gravy. i'm going to eat a bunch for lunch today. and then later, i'm going to get an extra long cheese coney with onions and a chocolate shake at sonic. then for a late night snack, i'm going to have some freshly made doughnuts from the great american doughnut shop. they must smother those things in crack because they're freakin awesome. and to make it perfect, right before bed i will top it off with a large chocolate milk. yuuumm!

what about beer??

Jake said:

Emily is totally right. The absolute worst thing for college students is beer and other types of alcohol. Not only does it cause more health problems than practically all of these things combined, it is empty calories. The beer gut is the most common form of the freshman 15.

Everyone know's the beer food group is critical to a balanced diet, emily.

In the option of maintaining....all but cold stone can go. Fast food and soda (any kind) are the worst...reread the Taco Bell comment and please tell me that makes you sick!

Isn't this all kind of, I dunno, obvious? Doughnuts? COLDSTONE?? C'mon.

How the Hell do you get 43 grams of fat into mashed potatoes and gravy?!

There's nothing wrong with potatoes and gravy.  Unless you do it the American way...would you like some potato and gravy with your cream and butter?

I can't believe anyone would eat that stuff.  Soo gross.

I wouldn't buy those foods because they are way to expensive, compared to the nutrition you receive. Doesn't fit in my budget. Only nice, healthy, nutritious food, prepared well... fits in my budget/lifestyle. Eating out is such a no-no for your wallet.
