Requirements: Résumé or c.v., CD containing five JPEGs of artwork you’ve completed in the last three years, two letters of recommendation, statement of purpose describing how your proposed learning experience will help you reach your goals as a mosaic artist, and itemized budget detailing your use of scholarship funds. You must be a current SAMA member to apply.

Available to: Young artists demonstrating excellence in any one of nine disciplines: music, jazz, voice, dance, theater, cinematic arts, visual arts, photography, or writing. You must be a high school senior in the 2008–09 academic year, or, if you’re not enrolled in high school, you must be 17 or 18 years old by December 1, 2008.
Requirements: Performance audition or portfolio. Specific submission requirements vary by discipline and by category within each discipline; check website for details.

Available to: Student painters and sculptors whose work clearly reflects the concept of traditional realism and the humanist principles espoused by the classical methods of drawing, painting, and sculpture, particularly those techniques that developed and evolved during the Renaissance and through the late 19th century. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an ARC-approved program.
Requirements: Biography or c.v., 5–10 digital images of your best work (in JPEG or TIFF format, 800 x 1200 resolution), three letters of recommendation, and an essay (max 250 words) on your long-term educational and career goals. If you don’t have access to a digital camera or scanner for digital imaging, you may request to send slides, transparencies, or high-quality photographs of your work.

Award: All-expense-paid trip to Australia to go on assignment with wildlife photographer Jason Edwards to capture images of the Arid Lands Festival and the Great Hughenden Camel Endurance Race. The winner will also receive an Olympus E-3 SLR digital camera with a 14–54mm f2.8–3.5 standard wide zoom lens, a Lenovo Ideapad Y510 laptop, and will have her or his best photos published on the National Geographic Channel website.

Available to: Students 18 years or older actively enrolled at a recognized postsecondary educational institution who can speak and write fluent English. You must have a valid passport, driver’s license, and be able to drive a manual transmission.
Requirements: A series of photos (max five images) — uploaded to Flickr with image captions and the tag ‘Scholarship 2008’ — that tells a story of a place you’ve visited, and an essay (max 300 words), with links to your photo series, on why you should be chosen.

Award Amount: $5,000 annual grand prize, $500 quarterly prize (three winners each quarter)

Available to: New and amateur sci-fi and fantasy artists who haven’t previously been paid for the professional publication, in broadly distributed media, of more than three black-and-white story illustrations or more than one process-color painting
Requirements: Three original color or black-and-white illustrations (use of grayscale, photography, mixed media, and computer-generated art is acceptable), with each illustration representing a different subject. Entries should be sent as flat, unfolded color or black-and-white reproductions of the original artwork in an envelope no larger than 9" x 12".
