The Student Aid Report (SAR)
About four to six weeks after the government receives your FAFSA, The Department of Education mails to you and to the schools you listed on your FAFSA a Student Aid Report (SAR) detailing your financial aid eligibility. Schools use your SAR to determine how much your family must pay towards your education (the Expected Family Contribution, or EFC) and how much financial aid you can receive.
If you qualify for federal financial aid, the school will send you an Award Letter detailing the financial aid package they’ve prepared to help you meet your financial need.
When you receive your SAR, check it carefully for accuracy. If it is incorrect, you can submit corrections online at FAFSA Corrections on the Web or through your school’s Financial Aid Office.
When you receive your final SAR, check with your schools to make sure they have the correct information and all of the documents they need to process your award package.
