Kodak Eastman Scholarship Program: Excellence in the Craft of Filmmaking Awards

Award Amounts: $5,000 cash Gold award, plus a $5,000 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grant; $4,000 cash Silver award, plus a $4,000 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grant; $3,000 cash Bronze award, plus a $3,000 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grant; two Honorable Mention $2,000 KODAK Motion Picture Product Grants
Deadline: June 16, 2008
Available to: Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who are planning to enroll in a film school degree program in either the United States or Canada for the 2008–09 academic year
Requirements: Nomination by a school or department official, a letter of recommendation, a one-page c.v. emphasizing your film-related experience, a DVD of your film work that best demonstrates your skills in filmmaking and cinematography, and a statement of purpose describing your critical influences and your reasons for wanting to become a filmmaker. Your film entries should be completed works that communicate a story or a theme — no clips or short vignettes.


About the HPA J. Michael Brinkman Scholarship & Mentoring Fund


Hollywood Post Alliance J. Michael Brinkman Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,000 (up to six winners, with corresponding $250 awards for the winners’ nominating instructors)
Deadline: June 30, 2008
Available to: Degree-seeking students taking a minimum of nine credits who have a strong interest in a professional career in post-production and who intend to live and work in the Southern California area upon leaving school
Requirements: Résumé, current transcript, a letter of recommendation, and a statement of purpose (max 200 words) describing your goals, interests, and how you plan to use the award money. You may also submit a sample of your work via the HPA FTP site.



About the Haydenfilms Online Film Festival

Haydenfilms 4.0 Online Film Festival

Award Amount: $10,000. The grand prize winner and four runners-up will have their films showing on Haydenfilms.com for one year.
Deadline: July 15, 2008
Available to: Student and independent filmmakers in all genres, including animation, documentary, experimental, and shorts
Requirements: Region 1–compatible DVD recording of your student or independent film in full-screen high-resolution; a short filmmaker biography (max 250 words); a release form for all actors, voices, images, and music in your film; and an entry fee. Submissions into the short-form competition are allowed a max running time of 10 minutes; the entry fee for short-form submissions is $40 until June 15, and then $55 until the contest deadline. Submissions into the long-form competition must run over 10 minutes but no longer than 35 minutes; the entry fee for long-form submissions is $50 until June 15, and then $65 until the contest deadline. All film entries must either be in English or have English subtitles.



About the first annual Novel Film Trailer Competition

Novel Film Trailer Competition

Award Amount: $2,500 grand prize, plus a ticket to Los Angeles for the awards ceremony and screening of the winning films at the NFT Festival; $900 second place; $500 third place. All three winners will also receive a full, permanent website domain for their winning film, along with an interview and feature on both NovelFilmTrailer.com and WebdelSol.com.
Deadline: August 20,2008
Available to: Filmmakers worldwide who can creatively and dramatically adapt one or more scenes from the novel Year of the Rhinoceros into high-quality, provocative, and artistic film trailers or short films
Requirements: DVD recording of your film submission, either uncompressed or compressed to no less than 100MB, in one of these formats: .asf, .avi, .mov, .mpg, .mp4, or .wmv. If you’re younger than 18, you’ll need a signature from a parent or guardian to enter. Your film must run between one and 12 minutes, and may consist of a single scene, two or more connected scenes, or a montage from the NFT Novel Scene Guide. You must obtain all required permissions for all actors, voices, images, and music appearing in your film. All film entries must either be in English or have English subtitles. You may submit up to five films on five separate entry forms, as long as each film depicts a different scene or scenes from the novel.


About the World Nomads 2008 Travel Documentary Scholarship


World Nomads Travel Documentary Scholarship 2008

Award: All-expense-paid trip to Rajasthan, in India’s Thar Desert, to go on assignment with filmmaker Trent O’Donnell to shoot a video documentary on the Jambha Village School Project, a community-project volunteer vacation organized by World Expeditions. The winner will also receive an Osprey backpack from Paddy Pallin, a Lenovo Ideapad Y510 laptop, and the opportunity to have her or his video documentary considered for broadcast on National Geographic Adventure.
Deadline: August 31, 2008
Available to: Anyone 18 years or older trying to build a career in documentary filmmaking. You must have a valid passport and a thirst for adventure.
Requirements: A video documentary (max three minutes, 15MB) — uploaded to Nat Geo Adventure BlogNotes with the tag ‘World Nomads’ — based around the theme, “A Journey That Changed Me,” and an essay (max 200 words) on what this opportunity means to you and why you should be chosen. Your video entry must be in English and in one of these formats: .avi, .flv, .mov, .mpg, or .wmv. You may submit only one entry.
