Available to: Full-time students who are legal U.S. residents and who are currently enrolled and in good standing at a public or state-accredited private or parochial school in grades 7–12, or at an accredited college, university, or community college as a first-year or second-year undergraduate
Requirements: Essay (max 5,000 words) discussing and providing insight on topics related to the theme of the book Solix Resettles Blue Mountain by Robert E. Dansby. If you’re younger than 18 when you submit your essay, you’ll also need to submit a parental consent form signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Award Amounts: $10,000 first place (three winners), $2,500 runners-up (eight winners)
Deadline: October 30, 2008
Available to: Full-time undergraduate and graduate students studying organic or sustainable agriculture who are enrolled in an accredited two- or four-year program in the United States for the 2009–10 academic year
Requirements: Two letters of recommendation and a personal statement (2–3 pages) discussing your vision of sustainable agriculture, why you’ve chosen this field of study, your plans for the future, and how you think your work will have an impact on consumers and on the planet

Award Amount: $500
Deadline: December 31, 2008
Available to: Full-time and part-time students between the ages of 13 and 21 enrolled at any primary / middle school, secondary / high school or accredited postsecondary / undergraduate institution worldwide
Requirements: Completion of an Apprentice Ecologist project (choose from trash cleanup, native tree planting, or create and organize your own environmental stewardship project) and a photo-essay uploaded to the NWP website that discusses your project and how it can take on lasting value
