Nine Unique Ways to Pay for College

May 10, 2007 08:00 AM

We all know college isn’t cheap. If you add up all the costs that you’ll incur during your college life such as books, supplies, parking permits, living and food, just to name a few, you’ll end up spending thousands of dollars if not more than $100,000 within four years. And we all know that if you graduate in four years you are lucky, which means you are probably going to need some extra income on top of taking out student loans.

But, you don’t have to work 9 to 5 in order to make ends meet. With the Web being so advanced and interactive, why not make some cash the easy way. Here are nine ways you can earn money in college without putting in an eight-hour work day:

1. Blogging –

There are tons of blogs out there that are willing to pay writers to write. If you are a good writer you can make anywhere from $10 a post to $100. It doesn’t seem like much money, but if you write a few posts a day you can make a few grand a month, if not much more.

2. AdSense –

If you have your own Web site or create one you can make tons of residual money from AdSense. There are a lot of bloggers out there making six figures a year just because of Google AdSense or Yahoo YPN. Some of the most basic sites like humor or celebrity gossip sites make tons of money. It may not seem like it from the surface, but if you look at how much some of these companies are paying Google and Yahoo per click to have their ads within those search engines, it’s no wonder why you can make bank off of terms like “mortgages.”

3. Help others find jobs –

In this business world it is hard for employers to find good employees. Sites like H3.com will actually pay you a referral fee if you find a good employee. In many cases you could earn a few grand just for connecting them with a good employee.

4. Videos –

Enjoy creating videos like the Mentos and Coke videos? Well if you create some popular videos and place them on video sites like Revver, they will split the ad revenue in half. If you can make a video that was as popular as the Mentos and Coke videos there is no reason why you can’t make $100,000 just from these video sites.

5. Freelance –

There are many freelance jobs that you could take that allow you to work from your dorm room. Some of the most common ones are Web design or programming, but depending on your specialty you should be able to find some sort of freelance gig that relates to you through this directory.

6. Games –

There are tons of games that you can play to make money. Moola is just one of the easy games you can try and do really well at where you could make literally millions of dollars. Chances are you won’t be one of the users who make $1 million, but you can be one of those users who make thousands of dollars.

7. Paid Reviews –

If you have a blog, a great way to make money is accepting money for reviewing other products and Web sites. By leveraging Web sites like Sponsored Reviews, Review Me and Pay Per Post you can potentially make hundreds if not a few thousand dollars for just one blog post.

8. Stock Photography –

You probably have a digital camera, so why not take some good pictures. It isn’t easy to take great pictures, but if you happen to take a few why not sell them to stock photography sites like Fotolia. They encourage users to upload their photos, and each time someone buys it you get a cut.

9. eBay –

Forget about selling your own junk. Do you have an eye for the fabulous find? Why not go out and scour flea markets, thrift stores and even antiques shops for unique items to sell on eBay. Chances are even if you have to clean up your purchase or reinvent an old rocker T-shirt, you can pull in some extra cash. Don’t forget, one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.

Gumiyo is a great way to sell things too... much cheaper than eBay - bc Gumiyo doesn't charge any up-front fees and they don't take a percentage of the sale... and they will deliver qualified buyers to your cell phone - so you don't have to be stuck in front of a computer all day monitoring your auctions... I found them on facebook UCLA and they were super for me.

An interesting idea, but there're at least a couple of omissions.  First, WHICH sites will pay you to blog?  Second, what about going into World of Warcraft, or Second Life, and doing things which can earn you dollars?

There's a lot of serendipity, too, so it's not as easy as it sounds.  Still, I like encouraging people to think outside the box.

When I attended college, none of these options existed. Nice to know my son will have the opportunity to make money sitting at his computer.

I know quite a few people who blog, (B-and C listers)AND use Adsense...and they make pennies a day. Most of them have real jobs. In order to make money at blogging, you have to have information people want, in order to get the thousands of hits a day you would need to make any money on advert clivk-through. which, in itself, can be a long-term, full-time job.

If you can make loads of cash like this... why attend college in the first place?

Sorry, but the majority of these ideas will make you next to nothing. Playing moola to play your way through college? you'll be making pennies an hour. ReviewMe and PayPerPost - to make thousands you must be the top blogger in a popular field. Digital photography? yeah, maybe if you're good.

Bullshit post.

Ha. Haha. Hahahaha. Ever looked at the average revenue for bloggers based on their blogs? Most of them lose money after paying for someone else to code their page, and paying for the domain name, and paying for hosting fees. Google Adsense has made it easier for ads to bring in money on a website, but it still doesn't add up to much. Not to mention that to get enough traffic to have a successful, money-making blog, you need to have an actual life - and sitting in front of a computer screen all day isn't near interesting enough to get thousands of people reading your blog. Amateur video-makers and photographers are even worse off, given how competitive the market is and how hard it is to get someone to notice you even if you are doing good work. Paid review positions are hard to find and don't pay enough to be worthwhile, although they make for great pocket change. Helping others find jobs is just silly - if the company trusted your recommendation that much, they'd probably want to hire you in the first place. Gaming is a slight possibility, assuming you can set up enough bots to farm enough gold to make a true living. Freelancing is a possibility, but it's not something you want to do long-term, unless you're good enough to start your own company. Not to mention that it's difficult to do freelance work solely online, unless you're a programmer or graphic designer or something similar.

In short? This article is utterly worthless.

seems like fun, but you would only make enough for a cup of coffee a day though

There are loads of great places online to make money - don't forget the real world to though. When I was younger it was all about grape picking in France during the summer holidays to earn money!

One of the best internet novelties for 2007 is Agloco. This is a nice little tool that pays you for your usual surfing habits. It’s starting in June and you better be there first (click my name). Hope toe of some help.

Cheers to all!

The big ones are getting a job early as most of the higher paying ones are taken before school starts. But really you can only do so much to earn an extra buck inside of college.

I have a bunch of ways to make college easier and other good college tips at they may not be the frat boy ways of trying to make a quick buck, but they sure help to know some things. http://www.stillundeclared.com/
